Both of these were in print by 1963. This is one of a series of books taking the O'Sullivan twins through their boarding school days, in England. It's called The Magic Tunnel by Caroline Emerson, and it's $8. The dolls did have strange names, but it has been a long time since I read this one and I cannot remember the name of the youngest doll. See the solved pages under "A" for more information. This could be Mystery of the Pirate's Ghost (1966) by Elizabeth Honness, Illustrated by Beth and Joe Krush.

There's also something about a set of headphones that connect to a special device (like a Walkman?), though I don't recall exactly what it does. This gorgeously weird novel holds readers entranced in a spell woven of moonlight, owls and poetry. I am looking for a little girl's book about a doll that is handed down from one generation to another. Also, three-quarters of the way in, a plot point requires her to suddenly possess Crazy Science Skills which she explains away by saying that she's 'always' had a strong interest in science.

This book will appeal to animal lovers and to kids thinking of careers as veterinarians or naturalists. The three astronaut survivors of the wreck of the Silver Queen are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their recovery and are trying to make themselves famous -- no one remembers anything about the wreck except that a famous scientist named Quentin was killed. Coverlet books as she is a "nanny" housekeeper for a family of kids and their dad. There's enough resemblance (orphan, which would explain an uncle, and the witness tree, which could be the redbud tree) that it seems worth mentioning.
